* El valle de la inquietud

Una vez sonrió un silencioso paraje
donde nadie habitaba;
se habían ido a las guerras,
confiando en los suaves ojos de las estrellas,
al anochecer, desde sus azules torres,
vigilaban sobre las flores,
en medio de las cuales todo el día
la roja luz del sol descansa perezosa.
Ahora cada visitante confesará
la triste inquietud del valle.
Nada hay inmóvil,
nada salvo el aire que cobija
la mágica soledad.
¡Ah! ¡Aquellos árboles que no agita el viento,
que palpitan corno los fríos mares
alrededor de las nebulosas Hébridas!
¡Ah! ¡Aquellas nubes que no mueve el viento,
que susurran a través del inquieto cielo,
difícilmente, desde la mañana hasta la noche,
sobre las violetas allí desparramadas
en incontables tipos para el ojo humano,
sobre los lirios que allí se agitan
y lloran sobre una desconocida tumba!
Ondean: de sus fragantes cabezas
el eterno rocío se derrama gota a gota.
Lloran: de sus delicados tallos
lágrimas perennes descienden como joyas.



* The Valley of Unrest

Once it smiled a silent dell
Where the people did not dwell;
They had gone unto the wars,
Trusting to the mild-eyed stars,
Nightly, from their azure towers,
To keep watch above the flowers,
In the midst of which all day
The red sunlight lazily lay.
Now each visitor shall confess
The sad valley's restlessness.
Nothing there is motionless-
Nothing save the airs that brood
Over the magic solitude.
Ah, by no wind are stirred those trees
That palpitate like the chill seas
Around the misty Hebrides!
Ah, by no wind those clouds are driven
That rustle through the unquiet Heaven
Uneasily, from morn till even,
Over the violets there that lie
In myriad types of the human eye-
Over the lilies there that wave
And weep above a nameless grave!
They wave:- from out their fragrant tops
Eternal dews come down in drops.
They weep:- from off their delicate stems
Perennial tears descend in gems.
